Remember Jubal? That French horse that used to teach beginners? (read article here) Well... here he is at Badminton. I received the photo in an email with only these few words: "and the rider was in heaven coming out of the ring..." I guess that says it all, really. Well done and best of luck tomorrow!

In other news... we leave for Kentucky tomorrow! Yippee! We're very excited. Hopefully, no tornados, (please).

And I still have a couple of big announcements to share before Rolex but I must find some time tomorrow to start spilling some beans, as I cannot count on people keeping secrets for very long.

These will be my last Rolex profiles... the other ECOGOLD riders left are The Fab 4 - Phillip, Karen, Boyd and Buck, and I'm pretty sure everybody knows them...so let's do these two lovely Canucks and tomorrow, we'll start announcing some cool stuff.

Jessica Phoenix

This is our Rolex poster, as voted by our Facebook likers. They even helped me choose the tag line. It's "marketing by the people" at its best! Like Survivor, except no one gets voted off the island. Well... only bad marketing ideas.

So Jessie and Exponential (aka Tucker) are going to be ECOGOLD's poster girl/boy and I can almost hear Jessie say: "Love it!" when she sees it.

I've known Jessica since I met her at breakfast, when she was staying at my hotel for the 2009 Burghley Horse Trials. I have to say she is an excellent driver on the left side of the road and we didn't even get lost. I don't recall if we had a GPS but I don't believe so...I remember Jess Hampf pointing with a finger in the general direction we had to go...

Since then, she had a baby, went to WEG, almost drowned in the Head of the Lake (was grateful for the ECOGOLD XC Boots she had on Tucker), became a media sensation.... I don't think anybody else has had so much going on in such a short time.

This is going to be Jessica's first time at Rolex. The World Equestrian Games were her first 4*...(start at the top, that's what I say). She is bringing her WEG horse Exponential, and also Exploring (aka Digby), who placed 12th at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio. So she will be a double threat!

Rebecca Howard

I don't know Rebecca that well, having met her probably only twice (maybe three times), but I can tell you that she has the most humongous saddle ever, which I hope is really comfy... because we have to make her pads specially, using a custom pattern.

I'm sure that's not the kind of information that people are really interested in... but I can't help thinking about those super loooong flaps when I think about Rebecca.

She will be competing at Rolex with Riddle Master (aka Rupert), her WEG mount, with whom she placed 23rd.

Rolex 2011 Preview - Part 3: Diana Burnett and Jessica Hampf

But first, in the "not having to do with Rolex or anything whatsover" category, is that the loooongest horse in the world or what? LOL!  (we posted this on Facebook, to everyone's delight)

When the Canadian team arrived in the UK for the Badminton Horse Trials, my British Twitter friend Liam @AbbeyviewEquine sent me a message saying "Would you be so kind to say a big hi and welcome to the UK, to the Canadian squad from all @AE and @PagePlay?"  Me: "What do you mean? I'm not in the UK. I'm stuck in Canada". Message pops back... "well, you are doing a bloody good job of promoting them."  

I guess we have a soft spot for the Canadian Team riders because:

#1. They represent not only our company, but our country. We love all ECOGOLD riders, no matter which country they ride for. But we are human, so when we embroider those maple leafs on their saddle pads, it's always extra special. 

#2. Anybody that lives in Canada knows that we are not a country of big budgets. Our actors have to move to Hollywood to make a living and Celine has to go to Vegas... So, we are used to having to make do with what we have, and the Canadian Eventing team is a great example of doing a bloody good job at making do. 

#3. On a personal level, we are very good friends with most of them... so double hard not to be cheerleader in chief.

Ok, enough violin-playing, here are two members of the Canadian-2011 Rolex-ECOGOLD-squad!

Diana is one of my favorite people, not only because she's a good friend, but she always sends me photos and tries to keep me updated as much as possible... I just have to ask nicely and boom! A bunch of photos from the Canadian Training Session with Gunnar Ostergaard (Canada's dressage specialist) appear on my Facebook page a few hours later.Yay Di!!!

When I asked her how she felt about competing at Rolex Kentucky she said: "Can't wait to arrive at the horse park. Manny feels ready and is going very well right now! I feel good having already been there on him for the past 2 years. This past week seems to be going sooo slow, it's nerve-wracking. Can't wait to just get there!"

This will be Diana and Manny's third consecutive time at Rolex Kentucky, and her fourth CCI****. The pair competed at Burghley in 2009 and I was there... and have a video to prove it! Cue tape.

 

Funny thing is, I never got to meet her until a few months later at the 2009 Royal Winter Fair. Hopefully, I'll get to be there again the next time she goes around Burghley. But first... let's get to Rolex. And before you ask, no she doesn't have her jog outfit yet but she's working on it.

Yes...there is another Jessica on the Canadian Team! And this one, I did get to meet at Burghley. In 2009, the Canadian team sent 2 riders to Burghley (Diana and Kyle Carter) and another 2 riders to Blenheim (Jessica Hampf and Jessica Phoenix). Coincidentally,  the Jessicas were staying at my hotel when they came to support their Burghley teammates, and I met them one day at breakfast. Just like that...

Jessica is Canadian but was raised in Tennesee, is based in Alabama (will be moving this summer...don't know where yet, but I bet closer to Virginia, where her coach Jan Byyny is based) and spends her winters in Aiken, where she is building a new barn.

She will be competing at Rolex for the second time, with High Society (aka Trevor). Last year, she had a "pilot error" in the cross-country and was a tiny bit disappointed, because Trevor had gone so well the rest of the way. So this year, she's pumped for a great finish.

Rolex 2011 Preview - Part 2: Sinead Halpin and Hannah Burnett

Here are our next two ECOGOLD-rider profiles for the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. Two lovely ladies! One that I know well....the other I just met a few weeks ago and am looking forward to getting to know better because she is charming. (Sinead is also charming. We only sponsor charming riders)

Oh, before I forget...I have to mention that our first Ammie Rider article was posted this morning. This is a cool project where a team of Ammie Bloggers (aka Rolex spectators) will bring you a fresh perspective on the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. Before I start profiling Sinead, those of you who read and enjoy her blog on the Chronicle of the Horse, can start sending me Thank You cards at Patricia c/o ECOGOLD, 4180 de Courtrai Suite 388, Montreal, Quebec H3S 1C3 - Canada. I bug our riders relentlessly love to nurture and encourage talent and have always enjoyed Sinead's writing, so I have been annoying the heck out of her encouraging her to keep it up. Thank God, she is gifted with superior intellect and listens to me (sometimes). :)

Sinead will be competing at Rolex for the first time, with her partner Manoir de Carneville (aka Tate), a 2001 Selle Francais with heaps of personality and flair. I just pinched that from her website and have no idea who wrote it, but the "heaps of personality and flair" part is a spot-on description of Tate's rider. 

Last year, Tate was qualified for the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, but an unfortunate injury kept him from competing. After months of rehab, work-out sessions in the pool (see video), he was able to rebuild his strength and come back last summer to compete at Boekelo, Holland.  The pair is on a roll this year, with a 4rd place finish at The Fork CIC*** a couple of weeks ago, and a win in the Southern Pines Advanced in March.  Go Taters!

When I asked Sinead her thoughts about competing at the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, she said: "I started dreaming about riding at Rolex as a young kid. As a teenager, I made the decision that I would do whatever it took to make Rolex a reality. Now as an adult, approaching Kentucky, I almost feel like that kid again; inspired, excited and looking forward to participating in America's ultimate event". Wow! Did I tell you she was great? 

 And did I tell you she was fun?

 

Last piece of news, Sinead doesn't have a jog outfit yet, but she's working on it. Going shopping tomorrow!

 Hannah Burnett

Hannah and St-Barths

You probably know Hannah from her blogs: for EN, the USEF Eventing High Performance Blog and also her own blog on her website and for being a rider of the O'Connor Event Team.

I'm really grateful that I had the good judgement to contact Hannah this afternoon, to verify a few things, because what I had written previously in her profile would have been a bunch of lies... well, basically 1 lie. I thought she was competing at Rolex Kentucky for the first time and this will be her second... but her first on St-Barths (aka Nike), thus the confusion. 

In 2007, she rode the now retired Keep the Faith, who also was her 2006 NAJYRC partner. Here's a cool article profiling them. (click here for article - Love Google!)

I also learned that she is from Kentucky (thought she was from Virginia...oops), which should give her the home-field advantage and get her the biggest cheers from all the local fans, specially the Kentucky Pony Clubbers. 

When I asked her thoughts about competing at Rolex, she said: "I've been trying ever since 2007 to get back to compete in my home state of Kentucky. I feel very blessed to be on a horse that not only can get me there, but also be a contender. Not only am I excited to compete at Rolex, I can't wait to see everybody who has been supporting me since I did my first Pony Club Rally. This week, I am a bit antsy! I just can't wait to pull into the Kentucky Horse Park"

Hannah and St-Barths are on the 2011 USEF High Performance List, won the Fair Hill International CCI** in 2009 and the CCI*** last year. I was there in 2009, and her win was quite memorable...Cue video (I'm lucky she is super sweet or I would be in big trouble...)

 

Hannah is super talented, not only can she ride but she is also a fantastic singer. I'm working on getting her to do a duet with Clayton Fredericks at our stand.... Oh, and for the record, if Hannah wins Rolex, it will be because of my great motivational skills and the power of positive thinking.

Our 2011 Rolex preview – Part 1: The Aussies

Last year, we did a Rolex preview of our riders, which was quite popular, so we're doing it again.

According to our Rolex Counter on the right column, at the time I've started writing this, we're 8 days, 11 hours 22 min 8 seconds away. Squee! We've started shipping our boxes full of saddle pads, half pads, horse boots, catalogs down from ECOGOLD HQ in Montreal to Kentucky.

The riders' pads and boots are all done....except for a last minute rider who just asked me last night. You know who you are!!! Thankfully, I was able to squeeze it in, so we're all good.

Ok, let's start with the Australians, because #1. they're cool. #2. both Australians at Rolex will be riding in Ecogold pads. Very exciting. I'm pretty sure, at some point, they will come hang out at the ECOGOLD Stand #69 in the Trade Fair *hint, hint.

Clayton Fredericks

Clayton has to win the multi-tasker award. He rides, he coaches, he gives clinics, he sings, he has a TV show "In Control" on Horse and Country TV, he runs a saddlery business with his brother Kelvin in Australia... wow, I'm already tired just to think of how he manages all that.

He is coming to Rolex with his 13-yr-old mare Be My Guest (Lottie), who was 3rd at 2010 Burghley. Lottie is already on the Australian Elite Squad, with Clayton qualified for 2012 London Olympics.

She was entered both at Rolex and at Badminton, which was a bit confusing, but I was told a couple of weeks ago that Rolex was Plan A. So, they have probably withdrawn her from Badminton as I write this.

He he... I'm super excited that Hamish has agreed to ride in our pads. I'm a huge fan of the videos he did at the World Equestrian Games...so as soon as I saw his name on the entry list, we got in touch through my super secret Australian source.. cough ESJ cough ;). Hamish sent back a message: "I'd be very keen to ride in the saddle pads, they sound like a fantastic product."

I've never seen him ride, but I figured he must be all right if he's coming all the way from Australia to compete at Rolex.

Samantha Clark caught up with him at the Kentucky Horse Park, and I was amazed at how nice he is. I'm average-nice, but would definitely not be so chipper after a 40-hour flight ordeal. I can't wait to meet him in person now.

Badminton and Rolex: bad news, good news and that darn app

In the weeks leading up to Badminton and Rolex Kentucky, it is sheer madness at ECOGOLD HQ. All our sponsored riders want their new saddle pads, horse boots and everything else (please hide that cooler until after Rolex, Max) for those shows, the spring season is about to start "up north", while we are trying to stock up on some inventory to sell... so I tread lightly as I walk by the production floor on the way to my office. As I hear the sewing machines going at a furious pace, the noise of the electric cutting knives and the tape closing boxes in our shipping department, I just try to keep out of everyone's way.

My day normally starts the way it ends, by checking my emails (a lot can happen during the night in various parts of the world). So let me share some news. First, the bad news.

- Kristin Schmolze won't be heading to Badminton :(

Cavaldi needs a few weeks off and won't be able to go to Badminton. He'll be back in work in a few weeks and will be back for the fall events. Talk about terrible timing....

I feel really bad for Kristin. Being able to ride at Badminton is a dream for any young rider, so she must be terribly disappointed. Plus, I was looking forward to seeing her in action (I'm assuming they're IS a live Badminton feed or at least that someone will post videos).

I've never met Kristin, but from her offer to return the saddle pads (are you kidding me?!), she sounds like an amazing person. So please give her a hug for me if you see her at The Fork.

- Neither will Emma Ford :(

And also give a hug to Phillip's groom, Emma. Last year, a volcano kept her from grooming at Badminton (she was really looking forward to it) and unfortunately, they've had to withdraw once again. Urgh. Hopefully, next year will be the one.
OK, everyone else heading to Badminton, or Rolex for that matter, keep those ponies bubble-wrapped!

On to the better news...

- Which means that another ECOGOLD rider, Lucinda Fredericks who is next on the waiting list, will get in.

- Our Rolex plans are coming along GREAT!

I will post all the details next week (don't want to spill too many beans...) but I will just say that we have THE BEST sponsored riders. They are not only generous with their time, but also trust me with blind faith when I come up with some unusual ideas. Also, you might see me hanging out with a bunch of crazy very enthusiastic lower level riders... really looking forward to that.

- Ecogold has been confirmed as the saddle pad supplier of the Canadian Eventing Team for the 2011 Pan American Games.

This might not surprise anyone, as the last time the Canadian Team rode in our pads, it turned out pretty well, but becoming an official team supplier is a bit of a process.
First, we were asked if we would sponsor the team again (of course!), then we had to submit photos of the saddle pads with the embroidery, to make sure the sizes of the flags, logos etc... were within the standards. Even if we've already done saddle pads for riders for the Pan Ams, WEG, Olympics, we have to go through the process every time, as the rules might have changed. So we are finally all good to go with the Pan Am saddle pads and just waiting to hear how many, when and where.

- That Badminton Horse Trials App is fantastic and is taking over my life

Awesome!

After hearing the news (from Samantha Clark) on Wednesday morning, I downloaded it immediately on my iPhone but couldn't get it to work on the iPad. But after talking to the developer, it seems I didn't have the right update. Today I've finally hooked the iPad to the computer, got the update, got the app and voilà, it works great (thanks Monty!) The buttons are a bit fuzzy on the iPad when you enlarge them, but once you get into the different areas, everything is perfect. I've been oooh-ing and aaaah-ing it.

They are posting new content every day: cross-country video previews, interviews, they will have live podcasts..even the weather. Just a warning, if you haven't downloaded it yet: it will take over your life, so do it at your own risk. Here's the link: click here to download the most amazing app ever

Ecogold's Badminton Preview - Canada's Dream Team!

For those who never read our blog, Facebook page, or live on a deserted island...ECOGOLD riders, World Equestrian Games Silver Medallists and lovely human beings, Stephanie Rhodes-Bosch and Hawley Bennett are heading to Badminton.

So far, their preparation for the event has been going really well. Hawley just finished in second place at Galway CCI3* this weekend and Stephanie is competing at The Fork, for one last run, before flying out on Wednesday (from Atlanta).

Stephanie sent me this message today: ""just had a SWEET jump/xc /gallop!"

I spoke to Hawley this afternoon, and she said: "We were second at Galway and it was the best cross-country ride we've ever had. Ginny was full of confidence. It was the perfect preparation". About her travel plans: "We fly out from LAX to Amsterdam on Wednesday. We spend a day in Amsterdam, which should be fun, and then we take the Chunnel to England."

When I asked what she was doing from now until their departure, she said: "We're keeping everyone bubble-wrapped!" Today, she was told her Badminton number... #55: her lucky number!

Hawley is not only a great competitor, but she never forgets to thank her supporters: "Thank you to everyone involved in my amazing weekend!!! I had super star ponies, fabulous girls at the barn helping, stellar performances from my students and great owners who made 700 jello shots!!! We raised some $$ to help off set the cost of BADMINTON!!!!!! I am a very lucky girl to have such awesome, supportive people in my life :)"

Hopefully, Steph and Hawley will continue on their successful streak and finish in the top 10 at the Badminton Horse Trials. Hawley has been working hard and hopes to finish on her dressage score (hopefully 44). In January: "I'm not going to Badminton to canter around Badminton. I'm going for some prize money and a blue ribbon." Stephanie's plans are also along those lines... So watch out world.

Our visit with Shannon Dueck and her superstar mare Ayscha

Team ECOGOLD's Shannon Dueck is not only an accomplished Grand Prix dressage rider, trainer and clinician, but she is also a dear friend. She rides for Canada but lives full time in Florida, so unfortunately, we don't get to see her often enough. :(

Shannon invited us to spend a morning at her training facility in Loxahatchee, while she schooled her fabulous mare Ayscha. The pair were the Canadian Dressage Team's reserve for the 2010 World Equestrian Games and hopeful for the 2012 London Olympics. Shannon now trains with Wolfram Wittig, Isabel Werth's former coach of nine years, and will hopefully, spend some time in Europe this summer to train and compete.

As you can see in the videos, she was a bit spooky but Shannon was really proud of Ayscha. She had these comments: " Well, the Special was not our best - I think we could have won it with Ayscha's brilliance, but she was so scared that she spooked in almost every movement as we neared the fences and flowers!
